Vincent Adler was a business man and one of Neal Caffrey's earlier marks.

Character Summary[]

Eight years prior to the show, Mozzie convinced Neal to run a long con to swindle Adler out of millions of dollars. All they needed was the username and password for Adler's bank account. So Neal infiltrated Adler's business as Nick Halden. This led to the meeting of him and Kate Moreau, who was Adler's assistant at the time, and Alexandra Hunter, who was secretly looking into Adler's business but was caught by Neal and Adler. Over time, Adler seemed to trust Neal more and more, even allowing Neal to invest in the business as an employee (which Adler typically never allows) and offering him a raise, which Neal turned down. With Mozzie's constant nagging to get the password, Neal was successfully able to ask Adler for it. However, the day after, news broke out about Adler's sudden disappearance with millions of his clients' money, leaving his employees broke, including Neal and Kate. Checking Adler's account, Neal only found a dollar left in it and realized that the password Adler gave him was an anagram for "Nice try, Neal".

It was later revealed that Adler escaped to Argentina, which was the original destination of a German U-boat, of which his grandfather was a crewman and who later told Adler about a large amount of Nazi treasure contained in the submarine.

Some time later, Adler uses Julian Larssen, his right-hand man, to blackmail Garrett Fowler into finding the amber music box, which was the key to finding the German Nazi sub.

In "Under the Radar", Adler resurfaces, abducting Alex, Neal, and Peter Burke to help him access the submarine, which Adler successfully found but the boat was rigged with explosives to prevent enemy access. Neal and Peter were able to crack the code with Alex's help, revealing the treasure within the U-boat. With no further use for three hostages, Adler drugged them again and subsequently ordered two of his henchman to drown them at the docks but the FBI showed up just in time to rescue them while Adler was no longer in sight.

The next day, while the FBI were busy searching the docks for the warehouse where the U-boat was being held, Adler showed up again just as Neal discovered the warehouse alone. He offered Neal half the treasure if Neal would help him get out of the FBI's perimeter, but Neal only wanted to know one thing: why did Kate have to die? Adler explained that Kate told him Peter had shown up at the hangar and he would've ruined everything. Adler went on to ask Neal to join him, but Neal refused just as the warehouse exploded. Both Neal and Adler attempted to rush into the warehouse and save the treasure and art, but a second explosion knocked them back and they watched the warehouse go up in flames. Adler takes a gun from one of his unconscious henchman and points it at Neal, blaming him for the explosion. As he is about to pull the trigger, Adler is shot and killed by Peter, saving Neal.
