Sophie Covington is the founder of an art charity and the widow of Grant Covington, a hedge fund manager who was under FBI investigation until his accidental death. Sophie stood to gain $50 million in insurance money, which prompted Sterling-Bosch's investigation. The media portrayed her as a "gold-digging, social-climbing husband murderer", which isn't true.

In "Parting Shots", Sophie leaves her husband's memorial early and is almost kidnapped out in broad daylight, but the kidnappers are stopped by Neal Caffrey, who happened to be walking by. After the incident, Sophie is brought back to the FBI Manhattan White Collar Division to provide her statement, where she was less than cooperative due to a bad taste in her mouth left over by the FBI when they turned her life upside-down while investing her husband's hedge fund, and she shuts down the rest of the interview when Jones asks about her relationship with Wilson Mailer. As she was leaving the office, she was officially introduced to "Neal Armstrong", an alias for "the dashing stranger who saved her life" to get more information from her, and she invites him back to her house to retrieve his hat, which she took after he saved her from the kidnappers.

Later on, Peter Burke finds out that Poppy Mailer hired Freddy Slavkin, a PI specializing in infidelity cases, to find out if Sophie and Wilson were having an affair. Through Slavkin's surveillance photos, Peter deduces that Wilson Mailer is the kidnapper and he was responsible for switching out Grant Covington's scuba regulator, causing his death; when his romantic advances towards Sophie were rejected, he attempted to kidnap her to pay for her own ransom.

Though initially hesitant, Neal successfully woos Sophie to lure Mailer out. On their way to a charity gala, Neal pretends to transfer all of Sophie's money into his rainy-day account (something he previously mentioned to Peter) so that Tony (Sophie's driver who was bought off by Mailer) would kidnap him instead of her. After Tony and Neal force Sophie out of her own limo, Sophie called Peter to let him know what happened. After Peter explains everything to Sophie, to save Neal from Mailer and Tony, Sophie and Sara Ellis agree to each transfer $25 million to Neal's rainy-day account to match Neal's cover story as he transfers money to Mailer and Tony's accounts.

At the end of the episode, Sophie kisses Neal on the cheek but they go their separate ways.
