Her older sister Emily ran away when she was 13, and she never found out what happened to her.
Sara's relationship with the con artist is tricky. In the episode, "Unfinished Business", on several occasions, she accuses him of stealing the Raphael painting and tries to get him to admit it. Later in the same episode, she suffers from the effects of Cabin Fever from having been kept inside the bureau since her "death." Neal, trying to warm up to her in order to get the documented "Kate’s last words," invites her to Chinese take-out on the roof. In the following episode, "In the Red", she believes he broke into her home (although it was Mozzie) and has him take a lie-detector test that includes having his apartment searched. However, thanks to Peter, she learns about Kate and sympathizes with him for his loss. In "Power Play", she and Neal share some very intense kisses in the archives of Ellis Island, resulting in a relationship that lasts for most of Season 3. She breaks up with him after she found out about the treasure he hides.
As in the episode "Pulling Strings" one can assume that she is still in love with him because when her ex-boyfriend was the main suspect in the case, he stated that he figured that she was lying about her old feelings and that she could not kiss him half "as passionately as she looks at Caffrey". At the end of the episode, they decide to become friends again and to go out occasionally.
In "Parting Shots", it is revealed that she still cares a lot about him when he ran away from New York.
