Michael Christopher Hunter's real name is Gerhard Wagner. He is Alexandra Hunter's grandfather.
Wagner was a German Nazi soldier, who worked as a radio operator in the U-boat headquarters during WWII. During this time, he received the final SOS signal from the submarine that contained a large amount of Nazi treasure stolen from the Russians. He encoded the SOS antenna design into a music box, planning on building a receiver when he got to America to find the treasure. Unfortunately, the music box was lost in the war.
After the fall of the Third Reich, Wagner fled to America, where he claimed to have top-secret information to share with the US, but was sent to a detention center at Ellis Island, where he escaped a few weeks later. In "Power Play", Peter Burke deduced that Wagner "hopped the fence and got in the naturalization line", registering with immigration under the name Michael Christopher Hunter and became a U.S. citizen (immigrating through Ellis Island in 1946).
As Alex's grandfather, he would tell Alex stories of how the Nazis collected the most beautiful things in the world and put those things in a submarine.
On June 5, 2000, Wagner passed away following a brief illness at Coney Island Hospital in Brooklyn, New York. On his deathbed, he gave Alex a golden cherub key, a part of the music box, and told her that all the stories were true and to find the treasure.
According to his obituary that Mozzie found, he worked full-time as a laborer at the Smitherton Street Mill in Brooklyn for thirty-five years until he retired in 1981. He was an avid fisherman, sailor, and storyteller amongst his friends and family.
